To Thomas:
For those of us who live in, or visit the Catskills, the issue of frakking is hardly child's play. The company uses methods that introduce cancer causing agents such as benzene into the ground. Many people's water wells have been permanently damaged, destroying the water source and the value of their property. The actions of the company in giving out the coloring books was propaganda plain and simple. They should be ashamed of themselves.

I have nearly 40 years experience in municipal water treatment. Environmental Working Group has proven to give false and misleading statements to the public in order to stimulate membership and monetary contributions. I find them quite unreliable.

p.279 you have confused the Colorado River in Colorado w. the Colorado River in Texas; they are two different rivers. the one in Colo drains into the Gulf of California and the one in Tex drains into the Gulf of Mexico

Good point, Peter -- this is what we should be doing. But the simple answer to why we are not doing so is: it is hugely expensive to replace the existing"one pipe" system with a new "two pipe" system. The idea is mentioned a lot in water circles, but with the recession and political gridlock, is not likely to happen any time soon.

Alex,
Good article in the NYT. I'll be brief concept and question. I live in Ann Arbor, MI, where we still fight fires and water our grass with drinking water, yet our water system is near capacity and failing under our street due to defered maintenance. The nearby Great Lakes are a comfort however. I used to live in Germany where two water supplies are piped to each address, one for drinking, the other for treated and recycled water, connected to hydrants, toilets, laundry, garden spigots and industrial uses. There is no "juck" factor and treatment is optimized. "Fresh" water is reserved for highest use, and "industrial uses" are supplied from "gray" recycled or minimally treated natural sources. If implimented here one would expect the financial savings can support a lot of system upgrade costs. Why is this concept rarely mentioned much less implimented?
Cheers, Peter Pleitner
